We are beginning the year with the scheduling of three amazing, recently produced feature films in Madrid and Cordoba. Two of the films are premiering for the first time ever at Casa Árabe: Gaza, Karma and Peykari DII (The Heart Sculpture)

Gaza, is a documentary by Garry Keane and Andrew McConnell, who, after spending years working in the field, have portrayed in their film the huge mismatch between the perception which international public opinion has about the Gaza Strip and the everyday reality of this small territory on the shores of the Mediterranean. It is one of the most densely populated places on the planet, where daily life has become an ongoing challenge for its inhabitants.

Karma marks a comeback by Egyptian director and screenwriter Khaled Youssef, who, after a lengthy career spanning over three decades, has created this new work to deal with the racial, religious and economic diversity dividing today’s Egyptian society, as well as certain controversial topics like marriage between people of different religions and corruption. The film’s screening will be its premiere in Spain, after the huge expectation which it stirred up in Egypt after surmounting an initial ban due to censorship.

Peykari Dll (The Heart Sculpture), by director Shawan Attof, is a romantic comedy that has become a cultural icon in Kurdistan, with an extraordinary response by the public, which has identified it as the most important film production in the history of Kurdish cinema. The film’s international premiere is taking place at Casa Árabe and will be an excellent opportunity to get a closer look at little known Kurdish cinema from a different perspective.
