As of Thursday, July 11, Casa Árabe is hosting this photo exhibition in Madrid. It was organized by Save the Children and the Humanitarian Action Office of the Spanish International Development Cooperation Agency (AECID).

The boys and girls who live in areas of armed conflict face violence on a daily basis. In many places, schools and universities are the target of violent attacks for political, military, sectarian, ethnic, religious and ideological reasons. According to the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attacks (GCPEA), over the last five years, there have been more than 14,000 attacks against educational sites in 34 countries, and thousands of students and educators have been killed or injured.
Schools and universities should be safe places, which is why the GCPEA, a part of the Save the Children Foundation, drafted the Safe Schools Declaration, the goal of which is to reduce the use of schools and universities in armed conflicts and minimize the negative impact they have on the students’ safety and education.

Spain has participated very actively in the process to draft the Declaration and was one of the first States to sign it, at the Oslo Conference in June of 2015. Moreover, in the month of May, it organized the Third Safe Schools Conference, with the cooperation of Argentina, Norway and the GCPEA, to increase global visibility of the problem of attacks against students, educators and educational installations, as well as the military use of schools and universities during armed conflicts. During the conference, further States were encouraged to sign the Declaration, as well as promoting the implementation of the Declaration’s guidelines amongst those which have already signed it.
In order to raise awareness about attacks on education and increase the visibility of the Safe Schools Declaration and its guidelines, the Humanitarian Action Office of AECID and Save the Children have organized this photo exhibition titled “A Safe Education for All,” with photographs by Spanish photojournalist Diego Ibarra Sánchez, to show how armed conflicts in several countries have affected the education boys and girls are able to receive.

The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 11 at 9:30 a.m., at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid.
