The group, led by Moroccan singer Iman Kandoussi, is giving a performance on October 30 in Madrid.

Zéjel is one of the most interesting musical ensembles within the scene known as the music of the Three Cultures in Spain. The group, led by the splendid Moroccan singer Iman Kandoussi, will be giving a live performance filled with nuance, elegance and musical quality, in which the musical traditions of the countries on the shores of the Mediterranean are woven into each concert.

“If there is one thing that has defined our culture across the centuries, it is mixing, encountering and co-existing among the disparate cultures that have set foot on the soil of the Iberian Peninsula since the dawn of time. As we have been taught, Al-Andalus was one of those cultures and historical periods that instilled this land with knowledge and art for eight centuries. Not only did its gardens blossom, but so did the sounds of its poetry and music, so well-known from the courts of Toledo, Seville, Valencia, Cordoba, Murcia and Granada. Christian kings like Alphonse X on the Iberian Peninsula and Frederick II in Sicily were left in awe by the art of Al-Andalus, which took on diverse poetic and musical forms. At present, it is difficult to reach definitive conclusions when interpreting medieval music, handed down through just a few manuscripts, with scant instructions in terms of how it is meant to be executed. Thus, it is of interest to turn to traditions which arose in the same time and place as that in which this music was created, and have endured in memories, songs and instruments safeguarded for centuries. This is the case with the music of Al-Andalus, Arab music from the Middle East and classical Turkish music. The coinciding musical modes and sequences between these music types, as well as rhythmic and poetic structures, are the excuse we use here to build a backbone for this project whose intent is none other than to bring us together to remember sounds that provide us with an identity today, because one day long ago, they were us.”

Iman Kandoussi (Tetouan, Morocco). Kandoussi studied at the music school of Tetouan, specializing in Arab songs from Al-Andalus and the Middle East, especially in the ancient style of the muwashahas, “nubas” and the music of the mythical Umm Kulthum. She regularly takes part in various festivals in Morocco and has participated in the musical competition “Stars and Stars” (“Nujum wa Nujum”). She has collaborated with musical ensembles such as the Andalusi Orchestra of Tetouan, directed by Mehdi Chaachoo, and musicians like El Lebrijano. With the group Estampie, she took part in the series “Women of the World,” held at the Castle of Santa Catalina in Cadiz.

Juan Manuel Rubio (Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz) is a self-taught musician whose great interest in ethnic and folk music took him down a musical path that has allowed him to study and become familiar with a wide range of instruments: the hurdy-gurdy, harp, bağlama, Arabic oud, santur, etc. Today he is a member of different groups including Artefactum, Capella de Ministrers, Ross Dalt and Dufay Collective.

Álvaro Garrido (Seville). Also a self-taught musician, Garrido tirelessly seeks out new sounds. A specialist in hand percussion, he studied at the Berkley School of Music (Boston), improving his technique with professors such as Glen Vélez, John Bergamo and Pedro Estevan. He has given concerts throughout Europe, the United States and Japan. He belongs to several music groups, such as Artefactum, Orphenica Lyra, Accademia del Piacere, Música Prima, More Hispano, Caravasar, Estambul, Zejel and L’Ham de Foc. Garrido is a regular percussionist for Paolo Pandolfo, a well-known viola da gamba player, and has played with Flamenco musicians such as Gualberto, Dorantes, Eduardo Trassierra and Israel Galván.
