Lekhfa: Experimental indie music at the Cordoba Guitar Festival

July 07, 20188:30 p.m.
CÓRDOBA
Teatro Góngora (c/ Jesús María, 10). 8:30 p.m. 12 euros.

With this performance, Casa Árabe is cooperating for yet another year with the Cordoba Guitar Festival, which has now been held 38 times. It will be taking place on Saturday, July 7.

In 2013, Maryam Saleh, Maurice Louca and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh met with the hope to share and enhance their admiration for all forms of Egyptian music, as well as their appreciation for the dystopian poems beautifully written by Mido Zoheir, who they have nicknamed “the fourth member” of this creation, considered one of the most talented Egyptian poets of his generation.

The culmination of this encounter came with “Lekhfa,” a group and album with the same name that came out in the spring of 2017 under the independent label Mostakell, composed in Alexandria and Amman and recorded in Cairo and Beirut. In January of 2017, the trio met at Malmo’s Inkonst (Sweden), and in April of 2017 in Cairo (after the album’s recording was completed) to design the live performance for this album, with Maryam Saleh on vocals and the guitar; Tamer Abu Ghazaleh on vocals, the Arabic oud and the buzuq; Maurice Louca on the keyboard, electronics and guitar; Khaled Yassine on the drums, Ghassan Bouz on percussion and Mahmoud Waly on the bass.

A sample of this work is what we will be able to listen to as part of the year 2018 edition of the Cordoba Guitar Festival.

Using rich, seductive voices and her captivating presence on the stage, Maryam has performed her contemporary compositions and reinterpretations at shows throughout the Arab world and internationally.

Maurice Louca
Inspired by many different influences, from the psychedelic to Egyptian chaabi, Maurice Louca’s second album Benhayyi Al-Baghbaghan (Salute the Parrot), which came out in November 2014, stretched the limits of musical and cultural labeling and was called a game-changer in the region’s independent music scene by many. Louca is an Egyptian musician and composer who was born in Cairo, where he lives and works. He was the co-founder of the bands Bikya, Alif, The Dwarves of East Agouza and Karkhana.
