Arab Cinema in Madrid

Casa Árabe is beginning its yearly film program by bringing back four fictional feature films that have already been screened at movie theaters in our country. They will be shown as of January 12.

These are recent productions which have received many awards internationally and will allow us to broaden the usual geographic space we cover by including two important titles from today’s Turkish and Iranian film scenes.

The Salesman (Forushande), by Agshar Farhadi, a film which lies halfway between the thriller and the social chronicle, has earned awards which include the Oscar for Best Non-English Language Film in 2017. Aïda, by Driss Mrini, selected by Morocco to vie for the Oscars in 2016, tells us about the life of a Jewish Moroccan music teacher who lives in Paris and her return to Morocco in search of her roots. Mustang, the first film by Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven, was nominated for best Non-English Language Film for the Oscars of 2015. Through five young new actresses, it shows us the oppression which occurs in a traditional patriarchal system. Clash, the second feature film by Mohamed Diab, made in a time spanning four years, daringly shows us the Egypt of 2013 and today, in a highly acclaimed work in which the director manages to place the spotlight on the human aspect more than politics.
