At its headquarters in Madrid (February) and Cordoba (February and March), Casa Árabe is showing this series of films, which includes three which just recently received international awards: Razzia, The Nile Hilton Incident and Of Fathers and Sons: The sons of jihad

The three feature films have also been shown extensively at festivals, film competitions and in commercial cinemas.

Razzia is the latest work by Nabil Ayouch, a producer, screenwriter and director from Morocco, known worldwide for his films like Ali Zaoua, Prince of the Streets, Whatever Lola Wants, God’s Horses, or her prior film, Much Love (2015), an award-winner at Cannes, though it was prohibited in Morocco.According to the director himself, the experience of social and religious intolerance lived first-hand was the driving force behind Razzia, a choral portrayal of four individuals who must deal with a society that doesn’t allow them to live according to their wants or identities.

Tarik Saleh, a notable director and producer of Egyptian origin born in Sweden, has managed in The Nile Hilton Incident to shift masterfully between the classical thriller and film that discusses political affairs. Considered the best “film noir” movie of the year, it earned awards at the Sundance Film Festival and was the big winner at the 62nd edition of SEMINCI, the International Week of Film in Valladolid.  The story of The Nile Hilton Incident was inspired by the real case of the murder of Lebanese singer Suzanne Tamim in 2008, in which a high-ranking member of Egypt’s Parliament and the owner of one of the most important business groups in the Middle East was implicated. It is a harrowing story of killing and corruption that took place in 2011 Egypt with the Arab Spring as a backdrop.

In order to make the disturbing documentary Of Fathers and Sons: The sons of jihad, Talal Derki, the director of Return to Homs (2014), returns to his homeland to live for two years with the family of Abu Osama, a member of the group Al-Nusra, a branch of Al-Qaeda in Syria. While there he witnesses how his sons are trained from an early age to become soldiers in the jihad. From the inside, we discover what it means to grow up with a father who deeply believes in a society that lives under Shari’a law. After winning awards such as the Grand Jury Prize at the latest edition of the Sundance Festival, Talal Derki now wins us over with a story that uses the daily lives of two boys to understand the complexity and tragedy of the conflict Syria is living through right now. It is a personal journey through a devastated country.
