Baghdad, a un paso del infierno (Baghdad, One Step from Hell) focuses on the beginning of the horrific dictatorship to which Saddam Hussein would subject the country, whose society was very diverse and advanced in the 1970s, when compared with the countries in its surrounding region. It also discusses how many people were forced to flee the country to save their lives, a problem that unfortunately remains a burning issue. In  this novel, which takes place within the context of Iraq while dominated by Saddam Hussein in the late seventies, Yashmina Shawki shows us how the country gradually sinks into chaos and despotism.

Yashmina Shawki was born in Vigo and is the daughter of a Spanish (Galician) woman and an Iraqi Kurdish man. Up to the age of eighteen, she lived between Spain and Iraq. She completed part of her secondary schooling at the Baghdad School of Music and Ballet. She earned her degrees in Law (1992) and Contemporary History (1993) at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She has been a regular writer for the press since 1997 and has been a columnist for La Voz de Galicia since 2001, as well as contributing to such magazines as A festa da palabra silenciada, Luzes, etc. Once a week, she takes part in the political chat on Radio Voz called “Wake Up, Galicia” and regularly talks as a specialist on topics involving the Near East on a wide range of programs broadcast by A Radio Galega, Televisión de Galicia, Vía V, Radio France International, etc. She also writes a blog, in which she analyzes current events in the Near East.
