Summary of the seminar “From Historical Islamophobia to Islamophobia 2.0”

From July 26, 2018 until September 03, 2018

Now available for consultation are the summaries and bibliography from the speeches given at the seminar organized in June at Casa Árabe’s headquarters, under the coordination of Ana Echevarría Arsuaga, a professor of Medieval History at the UNED, and Elena Paulino, an Art History researcher.

The objective of the course was to demonstrate the historical changes in relations between East and West, Christianity and Islam, from a multidisciplinary, unbiased viewpoint, until reaching the twenty-first century, in which new technologies have played a basic role in disseminating a set of ideas which promote hatred towards otherness and racist attitudes.

The course, intended for historians, art historians, journalists, sociologists and anthropologists, studied the origins of Islamophobia from the Middle Ages to the modern day, as well as the means which were used to create an image of Islam, with no regard for whether it was true or completely fictitious. Also analyzed were the ways in which they evolved due to historical conflicts and the appearance of new media forms.
