Casa Árabe has organized five different themed walking tours through Cordoba in the months of March and April, as part of the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. You may now sign up.

Over eight centuries after the Christian conquest, the Cordoba existing in the times of Al-Andalus remains very present within the city. Its best-known symbol is the Umayyads’ Great Mosque, today the Cathedral, an exceptional monument whose fame stretches far beyond our borders. However, this is not the only remaining vestige from that period. Many traces have been left behind from this past living on in our present, though their fates have been highly varied. Few cases have actually survived the passage of time and the onslaught of “progress” in a dignified manner, and of these few most currently face an uncertain future.

In this series of tours, Rafael Blanco, of the University of Cordoba, will be showing the heritage left behind by Al-Andalus Cordoba in the city’s streets. The main goal is to increase awareness about the historical importance of these sites and understand the many dangers haunting them, as well as the tools which society, their most important owner, can use to defend them.

Through this initiative, which is taking the form of five tours on different themes, Casa Árabe is contributing to this final stage in transferring to society the project to restore and highlight the minaret tower of San Juan de los Caballeros (Cordoba), within the framework of the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018.

This walk will allow participants to become more familiar with other “forgotten” monuments in Cordoba’s historical center, including the minaret tower of San Juan de los Caballeros.
The main feature of the historical center declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO  is the ancient Great Mosque, now the Cathedral, which has been the main focal point of attention in the city’s heritage and tourism for decades. Nevertheless, this exceptional monument has often concealed the true problem faced by the heritage sites in its immediate surrounding area, which has now grown overcrowded, with other monuments of great historical interest, like the minaret tower of San Juan de los Caballeros. These places are undergoing gradual degradation that jeopardises their material integrity.

La Axerquía is a place still unknown to many people in Cordoba, despite being one of the most extensive and interesting heritage sites in Spain. This tour will allow those participating to discover its importance.
It still preserves many of the marks left behind by the legacy of Al-Andalus: from its geographic name to the layout of its streets, and including its city walls, mosques, baths, and even the homes there. However, in recent years it has undergone a drastic transformation in its age-old urban existence, in both tangible and intangible ways. Though some of the heritage lost can never be recovered, there is still much left to be preserved.

Many excavations have led to exceptional advancements in knowledge about Islamic Cordoba, but entire neighborhoods have also vanished, with few vestiges being properly appreciated. We will learn about these on our walk.
In the tenth century, Cordoba, the capital of Al-Andalus, grew extensively through a series of dense suburbs known as “arrabales.” After the outbreak of the civil war, or “fitna,” most of them were abandoned and buried over time, until they reappeared during the real estate boom at the turn of this century. Many excavations have led to exceptional advancements in knowledge about Islamic Cordoba, but entire neighborhoods have also vanished, with few vestiges being properly appreciated.
