Translation in the Euro-Mediterranean region

From November 14, 2012 until November 22, 2012

On Thursday November 22nd the report "A Mapping of Translation in the Euro-Mediterranean Region" was released in Madrid. This project was carried out by Transeuropéennes and the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures and it was first published in June.

The event took place at Casa Árabe in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62) at 11.00. Olivia Orozco de la Torre, coordinator of Training, Economic and Business Areas in Casa Árabe; Ghislaine Glasson Deschaumes, director of Transeuropéennes, who presented the report’s results and recommendation; Luis Miguel Pérez Cañada, director of the School of Translators of Toledo (University of Castilla-La Mancha, UCLM), who exposed the results concerning the Spanish case; and Inmaculada Jiménez Morell, publishing director at Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo, who also took part in the debate on the situation of the industry in Spain and its challenges.

The report studies systemically the status of translation in the different languages of the European Union and other Mediterranean languages (precisely, Arabic, Turkish and Hebrew) in the last 20 years. It has been published in English, French and Arabic and is the result of a two-year program carried out with the collaboration of fifteen associated institutions, including the School of Translators of Toledo regarding Spain’s status.

The report highlights the crucial role of the translation of works of the imagination and of thought (literature, human and social sciences, theatre, children’s writing), in the development of an inter-culturality, whilst bringing to light the numerous difficulties that it poses in economic, cultural and political terms. In fact, one of the recommendations included in this report is to raise the number of Arabic translations into European languages and vice versa, because it is essential to promote cultural relations between Arabs and Europeans.

In numerous countries in the European Union, one in a thousand translations is of an Arabic book. As a source language, Arabic represents in France 1065 books translated in the last 25 years (less than 0.65% of the works translated into French in the period in question). In Spain the figure is even lower, just 472 titles were translated Arabic into Spanish between 1996 and 2010 (0.23% of the total). Meanwhile, works translated into Arabic from Spanish, German and Italian sources are also quite a limited number, between 1 and 2 per cent. In the last 25 years in the Mediterranean area, estimates show that around 35000 titles have been translated into Arabic from European language sources, being English the dominant source language.
