There are many books which discuss Islam, but most are academic, while others are written by non-Muslims in the status of spectators. This book, however, was written from the inside. Amanda Figueras is a Spanish Muslim journalist. Acknowledging herself as such was not easy. “The Fatima’s and Mohammed’s out there annoy people, but we are all charmed by the glamour of the Sheikha of Qatar, we all ignore the fact that Benzema listens to the Qur’an before going out onto the soccer field wearing Real Madrid’s colors, and we laugh at the jokes made by any Arab we assume to be a millionaire,” Figueras declares. What is it like to be a Muslim in Spain? How many obstacles do new Muslims encounter? Is Spanish society ready to deal with Islamophobic prejudices for real?

Amanda Figueras (Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona, 1978) studied journalism in Madrid and Lisbon; after finishing her university studies, she worked for more than ten years in the editorial department at El Mundo and At this last newspaper, her tasks included the creation and management of a section with information on the European Union. During her time in the International section, she was sent as a special envoy to many different countries, including Japan, Kazakhstan, Norway and Qatar. Moreover, she has collaborated as an independent journalist with various media.: Newsweek, El Universal, The Islamic Monthly, Egypt Oil & Gasand El Español. She is also a scholarship recipient in the Alliance of Civilizations project run by the UN and forms part of the Abraham Forum for Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue.
