The First Spanish-Arab Book Fair of Granada 

Organized by the Círculo Intercultural Hispano Árabe (CIHAR) and sponsored by the Embassy of Qatar in Spain, the fair was held on October 26, 27 and 28.

The fair  was held at the School of Arab Studies (at Calle Cuesta del Chapiz, 22), during a continuous schedule from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and included such exhibitors as publishing firms, bookstores and institutions that offered visitors a rich variety of books related with Arab, Spanish-Arab and Al-Andalus culture.

The opening event was held on Friday, October 26 at 10:30 a.m. and included attendance by Arab ambassadors and consuls, as well as notable personages from the world of culture, including the director of the Alhambra Board of Trustees and the director of the CSIC publishing firm in representation of the CSIC’s president, along with many others.

Among the cultural activities that were held as part of the Fair, there were book presentations, round table discussions and talks.A special focus was placed on the legacy of Al-Andalus, in both literature and the sciences, without leaving out art either, in which painting and music played a notable role through talks and concerts. Free decoration activities were offered using henna and Arabic calligraphy. The event was rounded off with three concerts in evenings of “Poetry and Music Fusion” (Friday, October 26), “Jinan al Ándalus” (Saturday, October 27) and “Mediterranean Women” (Sunday, October 28). Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

On the last day, when the fair was officially brought to a close, those attending who had purchased books took part in a drawing to win a watercolor painting donated and painted exclusively for the fair, by artist Rojas Al Andalusí, as well as copies of the books presented and donated, courtesy of their authors and publishers.

The Fair relied on the cooperation of the CSIC School of Arab Studies, the Alhambra Board of Trustees, the University of Granada (and their respective publishing firms), as well as the Andalusian Public Foundation “El Legado Andalusí” (“The Legacy of Al-Andalus”) and the Euro-Arab Foundation, in addition to others.
