Al-Andalus revisited by its researchers

From May through December of 2023, the Chair of Arab Studies at the University of Cordoba (UCO), the Abdul Aziz Saud al-Babtain Foundation and Casa Árabe are organizing this series of conferences coordinated by Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala. Check out the calendar of conference sessions.

The full series consists of eight conferences in all, at which the authors will discuss the latest issues to be examined in the various fields of Andalusian studies: from language to history, literature, science, geography, works by travelers and philosophy, to the current projection of the ideas held about Al-Andalus is held in the Arab world. These eight conferences will provide us with an excellent overview of the current status of the most recent knowledge about the historical period of Al-Andalus.

- Tuesday, September 19: “Al-Andalus according to geographers and travelers in the classical Arab world,” by Fátima Roldán Castro (University of Seville)

- Wednesday, October 4: “Al-Andalus and its historians,” by Virgilio Martínez Enamorado (University of Malaga)

- Wednesday, October 4: “Al-Andalus and its languages,” by Ignacio Ferrando Frutos (University of Cadiz)

- Thursday, November 23: “Al-Andalus and its thinkers,” by Rafael Ramón Guerrero (Universidad Complutense)

- Wednesday, December 13: “Al-Andalus in the current Arab imaginary,” by Nader Al Jallad (University of Cordoba)

Series coordinator:

Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala
Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Cordoba. He also holds a PhD in Semitic Philology and is a specialist on Islamic, Christian and Jewish language and literature, Semitic linguistics, the editing of manuscripts, text criticism and literary criticism. He heads many foreign and domestic research projects and is a member of different scientific committees: Graeco-Arabica, Islam and Christian Relations, al-Qantara, Studia Historica, Journal of Medieval and Islamic History, and others, as well as being a co-director of the journal Collectanea Christiana Orientalia.
