Ramadan Nights

CORDOBA

Music, theater, children’s activities, cooking, cultural tours and much more to celebrate the month of Ramadan. 

Series of activities organized by Casa Árabe, with the cooperation of the Urban Environment Delegation and the Special Delegation for World Heritage and the Historical Quarter of the Municipality of Cordoba and the Halal Institute to celebrate this important month, which is both socio-cultural and festive, as well as religious.

    As part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    Retazos de Al Ándalus is a show which arose from an interest in studying the cultural and artistic forms of expression during the times of Al-Andalus, and their echoes into the modern day. The musical repertoire is made up of traditional medieval and Renaissance melodies from Al-Andalus, as well as contemporary compositions which drink from historical sources. The show also includes poetry, with works by authors P. Ruiz and Lubna Shakti, having been influenced by the poetry of Andalusian and Sufi authors.

    Held as part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    Dramatization which is set in a souk of Umayyad Cordoba, revolving around the traditions and delicacies which Muslims enjoy at sundown after a day of fasting. Explained during the play is the commercial and cultural importance of tenth-century Qurtuba, which made it possible for many goods to be imported from the East. The performance will end with an interactive activity with the audience.

    With activities for children and adults, the objective of the day is to increase awareness about religious diversity in the fields of consumer products and shopping. It is held with the cooperation of the Halal Training School.
    12:00 p.m.: Screening of the story “Nora Eats Halal”
    12:30 p.m.: Show cooking event titled “We Play by Cooking Halal” for boys and girls
    8:00 p.m.: Presentation of the Halal Hub and Cluster by Antonio Fernandez Ranchal, general director of Fundación Agrópolis, and Isabel Romero, director of the Halal Institute
    9:30 p.m.: Show cooking and tasting of products bearing the Halal Guarantee Trademark

    Presentation of the re-publication of the guide “Islamic Cordoba,” published by the Urban Environment Delegation and the Special Delegation for World Heritage and the Historical Quarter of the Municipality of Cordoba. At the end of the event, a tasting of halal dishes will be offered.

    Held as part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    Dhikr (“Memory of God,” “pronouncement” or “invocation”) is a devotional act of Islam, characterized by the repetition of the names of God, or the pleas or formulas collected in the hadiths, or verses of the Qur’an. The Dhikr is an exercise which can be performed alone or, as in this case, in a group ceremony.

    Held as part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    Concert of fusion music of the Sufi, Al-Andalus and Turkish traditions, accompanied by dervish dance. The group’s name is inspired by the Arabic word al-Firdaus, which is used to designate the highest place in heaven. The members of the group, originating from Spain, Morocco and England, aspire to express the memory of the world from which we come and to which we shall return, through music. This type of music is traditionally defined by the Arabic word Sama, which could be translated as “the art of listening,” a quality which leads both the performers and audience to contemplation.

    The Cordoba neighborhood of La Axerquía owes its name to the Eastern Muslim boroughs (al-Rabad al-Sharqui), quarters outside of the city walls which were walled themselves after the fall of the Umayyad dynasty, especially during the twelfth century. This tour will take you through various archeological remains from the Islamic era within these urban premises and their surrounding areas.

    Held as part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    The starring role at this Casa Árabe Night of Games will be held by modern board games, a form of alternative social and cultural entertainment in which, more important than the game play itself, is the fact that people meet up around the table to enjoy themselves together. This fun party requires no prior knowledge, because monitors who specialize in board games from the “Jugamos Tod@s” Cultural Association, will be assisting the public. They will recommend games to each group of people, explain the rules and help keep the games going so everyone can play and enjoy. The board games will mainly have Al-Andalus and Arab themes as a backdrop, and there will also be special activities including group games, giant games and other surprising games.

    Held as part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    Presentation of the poem book “Abderrahman III de al-Ándalus llora la muerte de Zahra” (“Abderrahman III of Al-Andalus Weeps over Zahra’s Death”) by Angel Alcalá Malavé, which narrates the story of Zahra. Within this context, the author reflects upon guilt, repentance, love, poetry and some of the keys to the caliphate of Abderrahman III which still remain unknown.

    In today’s Cordoba, remains are left behind from some of the elements which were used to supply, store and eliminate water from ancient Qurtuba. Throughout this tour, we will visit some of the most notable and get a general overview of hydraulics in Al-Andalus.

    Held as part of the “Ramadan Nights” Festival  
    This concert presents a repertoire of jarchas, moaxajas, zéjeles and romances aljamiados, which give us a closer look at the origins of Spanish-Arab lyrical poetry, recreated and sung in musical styles from the era. All of these musical and poetic genres were to revolutionize the Arab and European literature and music scenes of the day, being spread throughout the Islamic world, and reaching as far as India and beyond.
