Casa Árabe and the Kifkif Association for LGTBI Migrants and Refugees in the Autonomous Region of Madrid have organized this day of events on June 20, on the occasion of World Refugee Day.

As it does every June 20, Casa Árabe is joining the initiatives to raise awareness about the status of refugees in order to commemorate World Refugee Day. At this edition in 2019, the institution is opening its doors in Madrid to host a day of meetings and reflections on diversity in the international asylum process, organized by Kifkif, the Autonomous Region of Madrid’s Association for LGTBI Migrants and Refugees.

Taking part in the event are Juan Carlos Arnáiz, Assistant Protection Officer at the UNHCR office in Spain; Uge San Gil, president of the Spanish Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Trans and Bisexuals; Javier Navarro, the manager of Kifkif, the Autonomous Region of Madrid’s Association for LGTBI Migrants and Refugees; Nessrin El Hachlaf, legal director of Kifkif, the Autonomous Region of Madrid’s Association for LGTBI Migrants and Refugees; Manuel Ródenas, director of the LGTB program of the Autonomous Region of Madrid; Mª Carmen Hidalgo, who is responsible for the Employment and Integration Section at the NGO Rescate; María Peñalosa and María Parames, promoters of Mundo en Movimiento, and Yuli Jara, a journalist and communication specialist at Maldita.es

The day of events will include four round tables which discuss different, specific topics. The opening round table will offer an institutional framework, and will thus include the participation of Juan Carlos Arnáiz (UNHCR), Uge San Gil (FELGTB) and Javier Navarro, of Kifkif. At the second round table discussion, legal intervention will be discussed, with the participation of Manuel Ródenas of the Autonomous Region of Madrid’s LGTB Program, and Nessrin El Hachlaf, of Kifkif. The third round table will discuss three innovative initiatives in the social work arena: “Befriending” by the NGO Rescate, “Madrid For All” by Mundo en Movimiento and “Maldita Migración” by Maldita.es. The fourth round table discussion will take place through testimonials from different applicants seeking international protection, to give them a voice in the first person about the topic of being LGTBI in the asylum process.

The event’s closing ceremony will consist of a small concert given by the Madrid’s LGTB Chorus of Voices.
