Casa Árabe, in collaboration with Plano Katharsis, is showing the
documentary series “Arqueología de lo jondo” (“Jondo Archeology”) from
September to December in Cordoba. This cultural project reflects on the
Muslim, Jewish, Roma, black and mixed-race traces of flamenco.
“Arqueología de lo jondo” is a documentary series that premiered on Radio Televisión Andaluza on February 28, 2023, coinciding with the Day of Andalusia. It deals with the Andalusian, Moorish, Sephardic, Gypsy, black and American roots of flamenco. A font from which entire generations have drunk, singing about pain and the sacred, in Andalusian and from memory, and the history of the people who recorded it in their songs, music and dances.
Antonio Manuel is the series’ narrator, in dialogues with experts and artists in their performances as a sound, gestural and visual tie-in with the story, flamenco melodies and history itself. It takes place in historical spaces, mainly the Mosque of Almonaster la Real (Huelva), as well as flamenco clubs, Andalusian villages and natural spaces. Over fifty artists and experts from Andalusia take part in this documentary series directed by Jose Antonio Torres and Antonio Manuel, based on the book with the same title.
The series consists of four episodes lasting 50 minutes each. After the screening of each episode, which will cover the different styles of flamenco as well as the origins and sociolinguistic and cultural influences it has undergone, someone starting in the series will speak at a conference, thus providing a thoughtful look back through knowledge and debate.
