The exhibition titled “The Moroccans,” presented within the framework of the PHotoESPAÑA Festival, shows a very personal journey by young photographer and video artist Leila Alaoui (1982-2016) through towns and communities all over Morocco. It contains a series of thirty portraits taken using a classical style, with formal references to Avedon and Van Dyck, illustrating the artist’s desire to break away from Orientalist viewpoints of her country of origin. The exhibition was curated by Guillaume de Sardes and was made possible through contributions by the Alaoui Foundation, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakesh, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Spain, Galleria Continua and Helicon Axis.
