Casa Árabe is once again collaborating this year to help coordinate the Middle East and North Africa seminar which forms part of the Inter-University Master’s Degree program in Diplomacy and International Relations at Spain’s Diplomatic School. It will be taking place in Madrid from November 14 to 18.

The seminar provides an introduction to today’s Arab world, a key region for understanding the development of international relations and diplomacy in recent decades, an area with which Spain engages in important political and economic relations as a result of its historical and cultural ties with the region.

In a reduced format lasting ten hours, the seminar has been divided into five sessions, with the first day consisting of a historical introduction to the formation of the Islamic world, global dynamics and local contexts, given by Maribel Fierro (Research professor at the ILC-CCHS, CSIC). The two sessions thereafter will be about the two main sub-regions within this geographic space: North Africa, with an introduction to its demographics and the social transformations it has undergone in recent years, given by Laurence Thieux (a professor of International Relations at the UCM), and the Middle East, with a class on its anthropological makeup and identities, given by Francisco del Río (head of studies at the Spain’s Diplomatic School). During the fourth session, Miguel Hernando de Larramendi (department chair of Arab and Islamic Studies at the UCLM), will be providing an overview of the Arab State today, and the reconfiguration and processes of change in North Africa after the Arab Spring. The seminar will close with a session given by Alberto Ucelay, Director General for North Africa, the Mediterranean and Middle East (MAEUEC), about Spanish foreign policy towards the Middle East and North Africa.
