    Decorated windows workshop

    From January 18, 2021 until February 04, 20216:00 p.m.
    ONLINE
Auditorio de Casa Árabe. Calle de Alcalá, 62, 28009 Madrid 6:00 p.m. 4 euros for the general public at the headquarters. 3 euros with online payment or other discounts.
    In Spanish.
On February 4, we will be giving an online handicrafts workshop to learn about archeology and history in an entertaining way. On this occasion, the work we do will be inspired by the decorative windows in the bath houses at Madinat al-Zahra. Sold out.
Islamic art is characterized by its “horror vacui,” or the need not to leave any empty space free of decorative motifs. Although at the present time we can appreciate little of this characteristic in the caliphal structures that have been left behind from Al-Andalus. At the archeological site of Madinat al-Zahra, you can see spectacular marble windows which were once polychrome.

The workshop will also allow us to talk about the “tacas,” niches or cupboards that were generally located at the entrance to homes and in reception spaces. At this new workshop devoted to the history of Al-Andalus, given by SextoMario, we will be focusing on this feature of Islamic art and seeking out decorative expressiveness in the form of a small frame, which we will then decorate in the Al-Andalus style.

Price per workshop: 4 euros for the general public at the headquarters. 3 euros: tickets purchased online, the officially unemployed, Casa Árabe Language Center students and Youth Card holders. You must complete the payment at least one week before the workshop is held. You may pay for registration through our website (by clicking on the “purchase tickets” button) or at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba (in cash or by credit card).

Now that new opening time restrictions have been enacted by the Autonomous Regional Government of Andalusia,  the workshop will be held online (when you sign up, you will be sent a link to join the group). The materials required for the activity will be provided by the organizers and are intended for individual use. Once your registration and payment have been confirmed, you can pick up the materials in person at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Córdoba, the same week when the workshop begins (from Monday to Thursday, until 6:00 p.m.).

On February 25, we will be giving this new handicrafts workshop to learn about archeology and history in a fun and entertaining way. On this occasion, the crafts we make will be inspired by the ceramic decoration of baseboards and geometric elements. Sign up now before the workshop is full.
One of the most representative features of Al-Andalus culture is the ceramic decoration to be found on its baseboards, always made using geometric designs of varying complexity. These compositions, which are combined symmetrically, formed beautiful decorative motifs which covered walls, fountains and other items.

Those attending will get the chance to design their own compositions using various tile arrangements.

Now that new opening time restrictions have been enacted by the Autonomous Regional Government of Andalusia, the workshop will be held online (when you sign up, you will be sent a link to join the group). On Thursday, October 21 at our headquarters in Cordoba, we will be learning all about this measuring device, during one of the many workshops offered by SextoMario. Sign up now.
The astrolabe, leitmotiv of this workshop, was a measuring device invented in ancient Greece, eventually reaching the Iberian Peninsula through the Arabs. Scientific and technological development in Al-Andalus boosted research and discoveries in mathematics and astronomy, and some of the most distinguished scientists of that era, including Azarquiel, built new instruments which remained in use until well into the the eighteenth century.

During this workshop, we will explain their basic features and uses. We will be making a working astrolabe that those attending can take home along with the instructions for its use.

The geometric design workshop is one of those most greatly appreciated by the people who attend our workshops. This time around, we will be presenting some of the most common Moorish lattice designs, and those attending will get the chance to reproduce them using ruler and compass. It is an example of how simple, repetitive techniques were used by ancient craftsmen in Al-Andalus, who were thus able to create apparently complex designs.

This year we will be taking the work one step further by changing the “canvas” on which we paint from a sheet of paper to a mural medium, using small rectangular frames holding a sheet of plaster that simulates a fragment of stucco. Natural pigments will be applied to it using the fresco technique.

Price per workshop: 4 euros for the general public at the headquarters. 3 euros: tickets purchased online, the officially unemployed, Casa Árabe Language Center students and Youth Card holders.
