On Wednesday, March 29, Casa Árabe and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Madrid are presenting this work by Tarek Eltayeb. It is being published by Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo.
“Seasons” is an autobiography which has brought together the author’s notes from the first fifty years of his life. The collected excerpts form a patchwork tracing a personal and familial journey that stretches from the Blue Nile to the Danube. The writer’s memories evoke the taste of tomatoes in Cairo’s vegetable gardens, ice cream in Gaza, the glitter of Mediterranean beaches, the buzz of Egypt’s Fatimid boroughs, the rattle of trains in the Sinai, music from the seventies, the smell of oil in Iraq, the exploitation of workers, border controls, the coldness of feeling foreign in a new world, love, hope and the discovery of writing, art and literature.
The author’s journey is an individual one, unique and unusual, like those of the millions of human beings who have traveled the planet in search of a new home and destiny. Among many other things, Tarek Eltayeb, an Austrian writer who writes in Arabic, has now become a representative for the new Europe.
The author will be accompanied by Carla Fibla, reporter at the magazine Mundo Negro. Presented by Karim Hauser, Coordinator of Culture and International Relations at Casa Árabe.
