On Monday, May 8, a meeting will be held at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid with a delegation of those responsible for the award, who will be coming to the capital to present this ninth edition to translators and Arabists, once again using Spanish as the main working language.

This year, the Qatar Translation Award will once again include Spanish-Arabic and Arabic-Spanish translation, as was the case at the second edition in 2016. The deadline for candidate submissions is July 31.

On the occasion of the visit to Spain by the Forum for Arab and International Relations (FAIR) representatives responsible for the Sheikh Hamad Prize for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU), Casa Árabe has organized a meeting at its headquarters in Madrid. Any translators, publishers and Arabists who may be interested in the prize are invited to attend.

Throughout the meeting, to be conducted in Arabic, the award officials will provide details on the categories and various requirements for submitting award candidacies. Taking part in the meeting will be Muhammad al-Ahmari, director of FAIR and president of the SHATIU Committee, Mujab Imam, director of the Translation Department at FAIR and an executive member of the SHATIU Committee, and Labib Nahhas, executive director of SHATIU.

Started up in 2015, with a total endowment of two million US dollars in its different categories, the Sheikh Hamad Prize for International Translation and Understanding includes Spanish as the main language for the award this year, making translations from Arabic to Spanish and Spanish to Arabic eligible for awards in the main categories.

The award provides great support to the field of Spanish-Arabic and Arabic-Spanish translation. It awards a total amount of US$200,000 for the best three translations from Arabic into Spanish and the same amount for Spanish-to-Arabic translations ($100,000 for the first prize, $60,000 for the second prize and $40,000 for the third prize). It also includes a special category, also awarding $200,000 ($100,000 for Arabic-Spanish and $100,000 for Spanish-Arabic), for contributions which build upon a culture of peace and promote international understanding.

Casa Árabe was one of the institutions awarded the prize in 2016 in this special category meant to acknowledge the track record of a person or institution that has contributed to the building a culture of peace and promoting international understanding, along with Banipal, a British journal of Arabic literature, and the Ibn Tufayl Foundation for Arab Studies (Spanish Arabism awarded in Doha).

Candidacies for this new edition may be submitted online through the award website. Further information at: الدولي والتفاهم للترجمة حمد الشيخ جائزة (hta.qa)
