We will be taking a closer look at the figure of Wallada bint al-Mustakfi in Cordoba on March 31 and April 1, combining the format of a reading club and a literary walk alongside Matilde Cabello, with the support of Cordoba’s Municipal Network of Libraries. SOLD OUT

Wallada bint al-Mustakfi died in Cordoba on March 26, 1091, right as the Almoravids entered into the city. On the occasion of the 930th anniversary of her disappearance and the twenty-first anniversary of the publication of Wallada, the Last Moon, Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba and Matilde Cabello are once again paying homage to the famous Umayyad poetess by recreating the poems and life of this famous princess through a walk along the spaces in Caliphal Cordoba that inspired her first biography in novel form, published in the year 2000:

“I am made, by God, for glory, and I walk proud on my own path. I give power to my lover on my cheek. And I walk proudly through my own destiny. Thus read the verses carved in yellow coal on my shoulders when I, Wallada the Umayyad, was already known as the Sappho of Cordoba and the poet Ibn Zaydun immortalized me in his verses (...) (...) If one day you go to Marrakesh and bare the soles of your feet in any of its mosques, remember me in front of the mihrab and ask the musicians and the snake charmers of Jemaa-el-Fnaa to celebrate the moon on my behalf. Thank him in this way for his farewell and let him know that my body rests forever in the Arrabal of Shacunda on the other shore of Wadi al-Quebir. Tell him what Cordoba is like since I last there dwelled, and tell him that from there I shall wait every night to see it drawn over the minaret of the Great Mosque.”
