Resolution of the Nur 2023 Call for Entries

From March 16, 2023 until March 31, 2023

On March 13th and 14th, the meetings of the Jury concerning the NUR 2023 Call for Entries organized by Casa Árabe and the PHotoESPAÑA Festival took place. In this third edition, a total of 22 projects have been received from different countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as from the European continent

The objective of NUR نور (Light) continues to be to give visibility and dissemination to a project that offers a look at one or various aspects of Arab societies. In its 2023 edition, the Open Call wanted to emphasize the relationship of these societies with the conservation of the environment, the sustainable future and the relationship of the human being with nature.

Selected project
The project selected to be exhibited at Casa Árabe within the framework of the PHotoESPAÑA 2023 Festival, has been Shifting sands (provisional title), presented by British curator David Drake and which includes the work of Rehab Eldalil, Seif Kousmate, Amina Kadous, Nadia Bseiso and Wafaa Samir.

The jury has valued with great interest the selection of artists and their strong visions when it comes to addressing, in a different and poetic manner, similar environmental challenges in their respective territories and contexts.

In the same way, from a conceptual perspective of photography, the proposal also addresses an interesting reflection on history and collective memory, inscribed in natural landscapes and altered by man, while calling for action in the face of the enormous ecological crisis facing our planet.

Lastly, the jury highly values the fact that this proposal is formed by a group of photographers coming mostly from the Arab Documentary Photography Program (ADPP), an initiative that provides support and mentoring to photographers from across the Arab world.

Special mentions
The jury also wishes to state that it has valued the following project with special interest: Paisaje indómito (Indomitable Landscape), an exhibition project curated by Analía Iglesias and Irene Díaz, which appeals to the rebellion of landscapes, natural, cultural and intimate against limitless extraction and greed. Iglesias and Díaz's project includes a judicious selection of artists: Imane Djamil, Yzza Slaoui, Maya Louhichi, Leïla Chaibi, M'hammed Kilito, Roger Anis, Hakim Rezaoui, Seif Kousmate and Soufian Chemcham, and weaves a close relationship between human exodus and spoil of nature.

Likewise, although in a different register, the proposal Immémorial curated by Nicole Hammouche, with works by photojournalist Jacques Dabaghian and which portrays the cedars of Lebanon, "sentinels" as the photographer calls them, ancient trees that symbolize the instinct of survival.
