Casa Árabe is hosting a seminar at its Madrid headquarters titled “Dialogues of Power: Intercultural Encounters between the Iberian Peninsula and the Medieval Mediterranean,” organized by Elsa Cardoso (ILC-CSIC) and David Nogales (UAM). It will be taking place on Tuesday, February 13 with free admission.

The seminar seeks to discuss the processes of contact and political and cultural exchange between the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean, which allowed the development of a shared language of power on both shores of the Mediterranean, beginning with an analysis of aspects such as rituals, architecture and material culture in Al-Andalus and the Iberian Christian kingdoms from the ninth through fourteenth centuries.

In recent years, Transnational History, Global History and Cross-cultural History (“histoire croisée”) have offered new perspectives by highlighting the role played by transcultural processes in the historical and cultural development during the Middle Ages. The seminar seeks to analyze historical development on the Iberian Peninsula in light of the broad space covered by the medieval Mediterranean in terms of political rituals, palatine architecture, sumptuary objects and court culture from the ninth through fourteenth centuries in the realms of Al-Andalus and Christianity. These processes made it possible to set up a shared language through which power was communicated in both East and West throughout the medieval period.
