Sexual violence within the context of migrations

November 18, 2019From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Casa Árabe headquarters (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9). From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

On November 18, Casa Árabe, with the cooperation of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is hosting a day of work events to discuss this topic in Cordoba.

Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a frequent violation of Human Rights, both worldwide and in Europe. SGBV, whether physical and/or psychological, includes domestic violence, harassment, sexual abuse, harmful practices, exploitation and human trafficking, as well as other forms of violence, such as forced marriage and genital mutilation. Women and men, girls and boys, LGBTI individuals: all may become victims of such violence.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Spain is implementing the European project “PROTECT: Preventing SGBV against migrants and strengthening support to victims,”  financed by the European Union Program for Rights, Equality and Citizenship, 2014-2020. The project’s general purpose is to strengthen the abilities of existing national support services for sexual and gender-based violence in order to better coordinate and make these systems accessible to victims and potential victims of SGBV who belong to migrant, refugee and asylum seeker groups. Another goal of the project is to raise awareness and empower these communities.

The project is being implemented by the IOM in twelve different European Union countries. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands and Poland, from October 2018 through March 2020.

The day of events titled ”Sexual Violence: Good practices for identifying victims and communicating with them within the context of migrations” will be held on  Monday, November 18. The first session is open to the public until the room’s capacity is reached and will be taking place  from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Cordoba (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9). The event, organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with the cooperation of Casa Árabe, will also include a training session  to which professionals, social workers, volunteers and technical personnel related with the subject matter have been invited.

Within the framework of this project, the goal of this training session is to meet training and special assistance needs in cases of sexual and gender-based violence, in the context of migration, for professionals who are working in Spain.
