MADRID
From January 19 to March 10, Iraqi artist Hanoos Hanoos (Kufa, Iraq, 1958) will be exhibiting his most recent series of art works at the Sala Invernadero de los Bonsais in Madrid’s Royal Botanical Garden (CSIC): “Scheherazade and the Arabian Nights,” in which he uses each canvas to develop the stories narrated by the main character in this classic piece of literature and universal story, “The Thousand and One Nights,” through a work of his own that reveals a colorful, intimate and avant-garde painting. In addition to his compositions, shapes and shades of nuance, Hanoos’ work is notable for its use of color.

“The series Scheherazade and the Arabian Nights is my most recent work. It unveils the stories inside, with life taking place inside the canvas. It is not intended to be seen but rather, quite the contrary, the characters are immersed within their own daily lives. Nonchalant, they rub against each other in close proximity and at the same time remain absorbed by their own concerns, a circumstance which is corroborated by the fact that many are literally positioned with their backs towards the viewer. However, I hope that they arouse curiosity and reveal the particular connections amongst them,” explains Hanoos.

A painter, engraver and teacher, Hanoos Hanoos holds a bachelor’s degree and PhD in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 1974, he began his undergraduate studies at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, completing his degree in 1979. After traveling to Italy and Europe, he entered Madrid’s School of Fine Arts in 1984. In 1991, he earned his doctorate with a thesis on the work of Al Wasiti with a “cum laude” qualification.

He has also studied Art History and Aesthetics. He has put on forty solo exhibitions and over one hundred group exhibitions, having won several scholarships, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Spanish-Arab Institute, with more than forty painting awards to his credit.

Hanoos’ work is on display at several museums run by different public and private institutions, in both Spain and other countries. A Spanish national, he has lived in Madrid since 1981, where he works as a visual artist and teacher. He is also a great reader of poetry and world literature, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Banipal Magazine of Modern Arab Literature.
