Islamic Finance in an Arab and Muslim World Undergoing Transformation

MADRID
This is the third edition of a course intended for analyzing diversity in the Arab-Muslim world from the perspective of international security, without setting aside its social, political and economic factors. The wave of change that was unleashed as of late 2010 in various Arab countries has raised questions about a status quo characterized by notable deficiencies in terms of well-being, freedom and dignity for more than 300 million people.

Using revolutions of an obviously political nature as a framework, the course shows an interest in analyzing the socio-political and economic context in which this broad movement came about, aspiring to consolidate democratic processes with full respect for human rights and guarantees for the basic freedoms of individuals. Within this context, Olivia Orozco, the Training and Economic Coordinator, gave a session titled “Islamic Finance,” focused in particular on the development which this type of finance has undergone in the countries of North Africa in recent years, as part of an economic agenda of Islamist parties and movements that have come to take over power or play a predominant role in the opposition.
