"Amrika: Arabs in the Americas"

From March 21, 2014 until June 13, 2014

Round table discussions, film screenings, conferences and an exhibition
From March 24 to June 11 - MADRID

The Arab presence caused by the migration which occurred as of the late nineteenth century is one of the various components which form the identity of the Americas. This phenomenon has given rise to different social practices and unique cultural expressions, and in some countries is being used to create social networks which promote a strengthening of the relations between states in the Arab world and the Americas. Since it was created, Casa Árabe has been determined to play the role of a facilitator in the work to recover and reflect upon this phenomenon and its current potential, as well as creating spaces which make it possible to hold three-party encounters.

It is in accordance with this line of action that we are putting on a series of events titled “Amrika: Arabs in the Americas,” which Casa Árabe, Casa de América and Casa Mediterráneo are organizing from March 24 through June 11, offering round table discussions, film screenings and conferences to analyze the presence of the Arab world and culture in Latin America. This series of events also includes the exhibition “Reflections of the Sky, Meditations on Earth: Modern calligraphic art in the Arab world,” which can be seen at the headquarters of Casa de América in Madrid.

All of the activities are taking place at the Casa Árabe and Casa de América headquarters in Madrid. The exhibition “Reflections of the Sky, Meditations on Earth: Modern calligraphic art in the Arab world” can be seen from March 14 to May 14, 2014 in the Frida Kahlo Room at the Casa de América (Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid), Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.
