Abadan, by Mani Haghighi (Iran, 2003, original language version with Spanish subtitles, 82 min.).

Amir has always wanted to travel to Abadan, and now that he has grown old, he has decided to make his dream come true. But first he has to deliver a package to a friend. While doing so, he vanishes.

Cast: Ehsan Amani, Farzaneh Arastoo, Dariush Asadzade, Hedieh Tehrani.

The topic of disappearances has remained present in the films by Mani Haghighi since he first began creating his fictional works, amongst which his film Abadan can be classified. Abadan is the name of a city and oil port in southern Iran. The director’s grandfather, Ebrahim Golestan, lived in the place for some time, and Haghighi’s mother, Lili Golestan, a translator and art gallery owner, grew up there. During the war against Iraq, Abadan was destroyed because of its strategic location within Iran.
