What disruptions and continuities have been brought about by the social, political and cultural processes in which certain Arab countries find themselves immersed? This was the research question proposed by the Contemporary Arab Studies Research Group at the University of Granada. The conclusions have been gathered in this collective work. At this conference, the book’s editors will be discussing, on the basis of their research, the way in which the concepts of democracy and secularism have been articulated within the context of contemporary Arab thought and through observation of how Islam has become a factor in achieving political legitimacy.
