Around the Gate

June 16, 201710:30 p.m. Duration: 30 minutes.
Casa Árabe Garden (at Calle Alcalá 62). 10:30 p.m. Duration: 30 minutes. Free entry until capacity is reached. The performance will be held outside, and the audience will be standing.

As part of the Filmadrid 2017 International Film Festival (Vanguardias Live section), Casa Árabe is hosting this performance by Moroccan artist Randa Maroufi.

This performance is a reflection about the movement of people and trade in manufactured goods at the border in Ceuta. Items are transported on food from one side of the border to the other to avoid taxes, then being sold in the cities of northern Morocco. Randa Maroufi is especially interested in the topic of this passage between two continents from the perspective of everyday life. Her research holds a metaphoric space in which the body sounds off, alluding to the geographic, sociopolitical and historical context which engendered it. With the cooperation of actresses Ana Eulate and Amel Souaid, Randa Maroufi invites us to feel the bizarre reality of the city and the border for just a moment.

Randa Maroufi (Casablanca 1987), an artist who graduated from School of Fine Arts of Tetouan, Angers and Le Fresnow, belongs to a generation which grew up in an era dominated by images, which she collects enthusiastically while showing suspicion of their truthfulness. Her work consists of photography exhibitions, audiovisual installations and performances which she has presented at important events and contemporary art festivals such as the Marrakesh Biennial, Bonn’s Videonale, the African Photography Meeting in Bamako, and many others, and at film festivals such as the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Subject Film Festival, FID Marseille, the Cairo International Festival and New directors / New films at MOMA in New York.
