New Series of Premiere Film Screenings

From April 29, 2014 until June 07, 2014

From May 9 to June 6, Casa Árabe will be screening four films at its headquarters in Madrid.

As part of the “Amrika: Arabs in the Americas” series of events organized by Casa Árabe, Casa de América and Casa Mediterráneo, our institution is putting on four film screenings at which we will analyze the presence of the Arab world and culture in North and South America.

The Arab presence, a product of the migratory events which occurred as of the late nineteenth century, is one of the various components which form the identity of the Americas. This phenomenon has given rise to different social practices and unique cultural expressions, and in some countries is being used to create social networks which promote a strengthening of the relations between states in the Arab world and the Americas. Since it was created, Casa Árabe has been determined to play the role of a facilitator in the work to recover and reflect upon this phenomenon and its current potential, as well as creating spaces which make it possible to hold three-party encounters.

All of the films will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62). The movies are shown in the original language version with subtitles in Spanish. Tickets: 3 euros for general entrance tickets at the box office. 2 euros for purchases made on the Internet, for people who are officially unemployed, Arab Language Center students and Youth Card holds. You must accredit your status with the proper document in order to receive the discount. Only one discount can be applied. Assigned seating. On sale at the bottom of this web page, or on the day of the movie screening at the Casa Árabe headquarters, starting one hour before the movie begins.

Film Descriptions

Incendies, by Denis Villeneuve (Canada, 2010, 113 min.)
Jeanne and Simon are perplexed during the reading of the will left by Nawal (their mother) in Montreal when the notary gives them two envelopes, one for the father they believed to be dead and another for a brother whose existence they were unaware of. They travel to the Middle East together and reconstruct the story of Nawal, a very special woman whose tragic fate was marked by war and hatred.

Only in New York, by Ghazi Albuliwi (U.S.A., France and Turkey, 2013, 86 min.)
A young and lonely Palestinian-American, desperate to find someone to be with, agrees to marry an Israeli woman who wants to get a green card, the residence card that will allow her to stay in the United States. A comedy in the purest style of Woody Allen, the film examines the culture and family traditions of these two characters.

Lavoura Arcaica (To The Left of the Father), by Luiz Fernando Carvalho (Brazil, 2001, 171 min.).
“I just wanted to love and be loved.” With these words, André, the main character of To the Left of the Father, imposes a tragic, melodramatic tone that overshadows the full three hours of Luiz Fernando Carvalho’s work, based on the novel of the same name by Raduan Nassar. Much in the style of a novel, the film tells the story of a family of Lebanese immigrants to rural Brazil in the 1940’s.

American Arab, by Usama Alshaibi (U.S.A.-Iraq, 2013).
Iraqi-American filmmaker Usama Alshaibi (Nice Bombs) shares his personal story, in which he experiences racism in the days after 9/11. The film shows a wide range of Arabs living in the United States and deals fully with the notions of identity and perception, while at the same time promoting the idea of giving people “room to be complex.”

This film series will be rounded off by another series shown at the Casa de América (Plaza de Cibeles) from May 20-24, including the movies Tiro libre (Free Kick), Yo soy palestino (I Am Palestinian), Amrika, Amrika!, Amerrika and Habi, la extranjera (Habi, the Foreigner).
