On Saturday, March 19, we invite you to celebrate the holiday of Newroz with us in Madrid. With the cooperation of the Representation of the Government of Kurdistan (Iraq) in Spain, we are hosting a performance by the Kurdish folk music group Arami Roh.

The holiday of Newroz is one of the most important in Kurdish culture and is celebrated with games, dances, music, family gatherings, special meals and poetry readings. On the eve of Newroz, bonfires and torches are lit in the reigon of Kurdistan. Fire symbolizes the end of winter darkness and the rebirth of spring light and fertility. The holiday of Newroz, which is celebrated on the spring equinox, symbolizes the arrival of the new year according to the Persian calendar.

Newroz is a festival of pre-Islamic origin that has been celebrated in the Middle East for at least 3000 years and is strongly rooted in the rituals and traditions of Zoroastrianism. Today, the festival of Newroz is celebrated by the Kurds and in many territories that once belonged to the Persian Empire, including Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other Central Asian countries. This year, Casa Árabe is hosting the celebration of this festival in collaboration with the Representation of the Government of Kurdistan (Iraq) in Spain, along with the Kurdish folk music group Arami Roh.

Arami Roh
The group is originally from the city of Koysinjaq, located in Iraqi Kurdistan and known for being the birthplace of important poets and artists. It was formed in the year of 2015 with eight members who perform using a fusion of sounds based on Eastern and Western instruments like the banjo, flute, guitar, santur, saz, daf and percussion instruments, which they use to develop a repertoire of classical Kurdish  folk tunes often mixed with contemporary music.
