This pianist of Lebanese origin will be presenting his project, “The
Afro-Tarab Pairings Project” in the Spanish capital, at a performance
taking place at Casa Árabe on November 18. Tickets now on sale.
The Afro-Tarab Pairings Project is a solo piano concert at which well-known jazz pianist Tarek Yamani explores the parallelisms between compositions with Arab and Tarab influences, and pieces with influence from jazz and Afro-American music styles. The concept arose when Yamani observed the surprising resemblance that exists between these musical repertoires, not only in terms of their musical spirit, but also their titles and poetic allusions, something which remains a mystery to this musician.
Some of the combined pieces include:
- “Com Açúcar, Com Afeto” by Brazil’s Chico Buarque and “Muwashah Hubbi Zurni” by Egypt’s Darwich Al Hariri;
- “Lush Life” by Billy Strayhorn and “Lahn Al Shayalan” by Alexandrian Sayed Darwich;
- “Tú eres mi todo” and “Bala Wala Chi” by Lebanon’s Ziad Rahbani,
- “A Night In Tunisia” by Dizzy Gillespie and “Fi Hulal Al Afrah” by Egypt’s Kamel Al Khulai.
“The pioneering pianist transforms Khaleeji music.” (CNN)
“Luminous music rooted in the harmony of jazz and Arab traditions. Here you will find no kitsch postcards, but instead a cheerful, thoughtful viewpoint.” (Télérama)
