Dialogue and identities through film

From May 29, 2015 until July 05, 2015
EL ESCORIAL

There is still space left in this course, which introduces film as a tool for bringing societies and cultures closer together. It will be held in El Escorial from July 6-10.

Casa Árabe has organized one of the four sessions in the course “Dialogue and identities through film,” directed by the Centro Sefarad-Israel as part of a cooperation project by the Network of “Casas” for public diplomacy run by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, as part of the Summer Courses at El Escorial, given by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The course will be held from July 6-10 and is structured around a series of master conferences in the morning and cinema forum sessions in the evening.

The goal of the course is to analyze in what way the dissemination of the artistic production from other cultures can contribute to bringing their societies close together, in particular through the viewpoint offered by film as a fundamental tool for teaching in our times. Each day will be devoted to one of Spain’s “Casas,” with the participation of Casa América, Casa Árabe, Casa África and the Centro Sefarad-Israel. During these days, the main challenges will be discussed with debates over identities in the regions for which each “Casa” performs its activities.

The session organized by Casa Árabe will be held on July 7 and begins in the morning with a conference titled “The Construction of Arab Identity: From World War I to our day,” given by Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe, followed by a second conference on “Dialogue and Conflict: Muslim communities in Europe,” given by Javier Rosón, an analyst of Islam in Europe for Casa Árabe. In the evening, the round table discussion and cinema forum will be held with a screening of the movie “London River,” by Rachid Bouchareb (2009) and the participation of Javier Rosón and Nuria Medina, Casa Árabe’s Coordinator of Cultural Programs. It will be moderated by Sonia Sánchez Díaz, the director of the Institute of Israeli Studies and of the course itself.
