Europe and the Conflicts in the Middle East

From April 24, 2014 until May 07, 2014

Conference on Wednesday, May 7 in Madrid

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Palacio, and the Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program of the European Council for Foreign Relations will be analyzing the European Union’s role in the Iran and Palestine conflicts.

The conference, organized by Casa Árabe and the European Council for Foreign Relations (ECFR), will be moderated by journalist Mayte Carrasco and presented by Karim Hauser, who is responsible for Casa Árabe’s governance area; and by Francisco Borja Lasheras, Assistant Director of the ECFR. The event will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Casa Árabe’s Auditorium in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62) in English, with simultaneous translation into Spanish. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

Daniel Levy will explain why the EU and the United States have few cards left to play in their hands as intermediaries in a peace process in which the two-state solution seems more distant than ever. The question is to figure out whether the EU, given the little willingness which the Israeli government has displayed up to now, can truly play any role as a facilitator or creator of momentum. Ana Palacio will examine the latest advancements in the negotiations with Iran, the possible tensions which may arise between the P5+1 after the events that have taken place in the Ukraine, and the prospects for a relationship between the EU and Iran that goes beyond just the nuclear issue, bearing in mind the regional outlook and the rivalry with Saudi Arabia.
