Casa Árabe and the Anna Lindh Foundation have cooperated to organize this seminar put on by the  “Tres Culturas de Sevilla” Foundation from November 30 and December 1, 2016.

The ALQANTARA Program: Bridges for dialogue and co-existence encompasses a whole series of cooperation activities that have come about through the strategic partnership developed between the “Tres Culturas” Foundation and the Ministry Responsible for Moroccan Communities Residing Abroad and Migration Affairs.

It is a project that was created as a permanent expression of the will of Andalusian and Moroccan societies and governments, represented by the Tres Culturas Foundation and the Ministry Responsible for Moroccan Communities Residing Abroad and Migration Affairs, to create a common road map for facing the major challenges being dealt with in Mediterranean societies.

The ALQANTARA program has held three large forums up to  now.

The first took place in Seville on February 23-24, 2016, with the title “TANMIA: Cultural development, a space for development and resistance against radicalization” and was focused on the relationships Spain and Andalusia have with the three countries of the Maghreb region (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco). They share a very rich heritage in terms of monuments and culture that serves as a source for bringing these people together, with potential for inclusive, sustainable development. Entities from the public and private sectors, and from civil society, took part in the event.

The second forum was held from April 28-30, 2016 in Granada and had the title: “Tres Festival: Voices of the Mediterranean.” With an interesting three-sided conversation format, the “Tres Festival, Voices of the Mediterranean” forum brought together top Mediterranean intellectuals to discuss literature. Attending in Granada were authors who contributed with their literary experience to opening up a common path for understanding and freedom.

Last of all, the Third Forum, held in Malaga from June 1-3, 2016, had the title: “TRES Med: Communicating the Mediterranean.” It created a space for dialogue in which journalists and the media from the Mediterranean debated over current affairs, including: the refugee crisis, the intensification of migratory movements and the threat of phenomena such as radicalism and fundamentalism, on the one hand, and racism and xenophobia, on the other.

To complete this series of activities, we are presenting the Fourth Forum, titled: “Geopolitical Situation and Values in the Mediterranean and Near East: The current state of affairs and future prospects,” which will be taking place in Seville at the Foundation’s headquarters on November 30 and December 1, 2016. This forum will analyze in detail the transformation which the Mediterranean region has undergone in recent decades from two different perspectives.

First of all, we will take a look at it from a sociopolitical point of view, reflecting on the possibility of managing and controlling today’s challenges using guidelines and institutions from the past, as well as analyzing what policy would be the most appropriate for the EU in terms of the Mediterranean, considering current and potential future scenarios.

Secondly, from a cultural and religious perspective, we will delve further into the reasons why there have been obvious attempts to instrumentalize the cultures and religions of the Mediterranean to use them as a basis for dividing people and denying the art of co-existence which has been a regular presence throughout the Mediterranean region.

All in all, specialized analysis has become necessary to get a clearer view of all these matters, thereby preventing confrontations and the deceptive manipulation of values. This is a state of affairs in which the examples of good practices (such as the democratic change in Tunisia or Morocco, and the pragmatic focus of their relations with Spain) will be highlighted. Extrapolating them will no doubt help turn these trends around, as well as allowing us to get an intuitive idea about what will be happening in the future.
