Traditional Kurdish music with flamenco. Performances in Madrid and Cordoba

This Syrian oud player, who has resided in Spain for 20 years, is presenting his new work dedicated to the Syrian refugee camp of Campo Domiz, located in Iraqi Kurdistan.

“In March 2011, a peaceful revolution began in Syria with the goal of putting a stop to the dictatorship, but it ended up turning into a war. As a result of this conflict, millions of people began to flee the country in search of a new destination where they could once again find the peace they had lost, far from their homes. As a result of being uprooted, they gradually formed dozens of camps which now house millions of people, who are forced to put up with extreme conditions. The Domîz refugee camp, located in Iraq, just 60 kilometers from the border with Syria, is one of them.

This album is the result of my decision to record my compositions, so as to use the benefits for these refugees, because I hope to convey encouragement and patience to them so that they can surmount this horrible chapter in our history, whether they are Kurdish, Arab, Syrian or Armenian, and to all of the Syrian people. Hopefully, this music will be able to encourage them and give them hope.”

Gani Mirzo in concert
Born in Qamichi, Syria, Gani Mirzo is well-known as an expert on Eastern music, and a professor and composer for the Arabic oud. Since his childhood, he lived in Aleppo, where he studied at the Music Conservatory. He later became specialized by studying with the prestigious masters Nuri Escandar (composition) and Qadri Dala (Eastern oud). From 1994 to 2000, he researched flamenco with Professor Manuel Granados at the Liceo Conservatory in Barcelona. In 1995, he created the Gani Mirzo Band, acknowledged for its music research work on the fusion of different music trends: Kurdish music and Eastern music in general, along with flamenco and jazz. The group’s repertoire contains some of Mirzo’s own compositions inspired by Eastern Kurdish music composed for the Arabic oud and accompanied by the flamenco guitar, with which he creates a musical illusion that links East and West in a delicate, modern way.

Gani Mirzo has performed on stages around the world, including the Murcia Tres Culturas Festival (2014), Barcelona Auditorium (2014), Mediterranean Fair of Manresa (2013), Lagerhalle Saal de Osnabruck, Germany (2013), National Art Museum of Catalonia (2013), Andalusian Music Festival in Fez, Morocco (2013), Festes de la Mercè in Barcelona (2012), Festival Portalblau de L’Escala (2011), Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (2011), Hakkary University in Turkey (2011), and the Festival Grec in Barcelona (2010), as well as others.
