Throughout the upcoming weeks, the institution will be taking part in three events devoted to highlighting architectural heritage in the city of Madrid. Sign up and find out more about the Escuelas Aguirre building, Casa Árabe’s current headquarters.

It is one of the finest examples of the Neo-Mudéjar architectural style remaining in our city.  It was built at the initiative of philanthropist Don Lucas Aguirre y Juárez and designed by architect Emilio Rodríguez Ayuso, its construction having begun in 1884  and ending two years later.

On the weekend of September 28 and 29, Casa Árabe will be taking part in Open House Madrid, a festival of an international scope which takes place one weekend each year in over 30 cities all over the world. For two days, the doors of dozens of public buildings, work spaces, residences, and architects’ and artists’ studios that cannot normally be visited will be opened, with free entry. This year, the fifth edition of the event is taking place, with the opening of more than 100 buildings and architecture studios, with a look back at the figure of emblematic Spanish architect Miguel Fisac (1913-2006) and his work.  To pay homage to him, guided tours will be given to some of his best-known projects, with exhibitions and activities about his work. The guided tours of Casa Árabe will be taking place on Saturday, September 28 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and from 4:00-8:00 p.m., and on Sunday, September 29 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. You do not need to sign up in advance, and groups will be formed in the order of arrival. Coinciding with the centennial celebration of the journal Revista Arquitectura and the 90th anniversary of the Official Architects’ Association of Madrid (COAM), we will be celebrating the sixteenth edition of Architecture Week from September 30 through October 7, 2019. Conferences, exhibitions, new visits and tours of buildings: all will give our society a closer look at architecture and help increase awareness about Madrid’s valuable architectural heritage. Casa Árabe will be forming part of this celebration on Monday, September 30 by offering guided tours of its building from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. No prior registration is required. Moreover, as a new part of Architecture Week this year, there will be new urbanism and architecture tours given by some of the Honorary Members of the COAM, and a series of dialogues will begin, which will be continuing over the upcoming months, about the ways in which Madrid has evolved in the last 100 years, as seen through the eyes of some of its great protagonists, with the city’s architecture as a witness and backdrop.

The objective of this program is to provide a closer look at the historical, cultural, architectural and artistic heritage of the city for all of Madrid’s residents and visitors during one weekend in the month of October, by organizing special activities, such as guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, conferences, workshops and children’s activities. For yet another year, Casa Árabe is taking part in this program with guided tours of its headquarters on Saturday, October 19 at noon. Madrid Otra Mirada provides a unique opportunity to highlight and  increase awareness about our heritage, while also discovering how the institutions in our surrounding area came about. Last year, 195 institutions took part, with nearly 200 scheduled activities. This seventh edition is devoted to the candidacy of the “Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro Park: Landscape of Arts and Sciences”  to become a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape.
