Casa Árabe and the Representative in Spain of the Regional Government of Iraqi Kurdistan have organized this conference in Madrid.

The media constantly speak about the operation in Mosul, the war against Daesh (or ISIS, after its acronym in English), but they often leave out the humanitarian consequences. The war has led to the forced displacement of millions of people in Iraq and Syria since 2014. Arab, Christian and Yazidi families have been persecuted, threatened and massacred. Most of those saved have found refuge in the region of Iraqi Kurdistan. There are more than 2 million displaced people, and the number of victims continues to grow each day. The camps are overflowing with people. International humanitarian aid is insufficient and does not even cover the basic needs.

This conference invites us to gain first-hand knowledge about the current situation for refugees and the displaced in the region of Kurdistan, to provoke thought with a view to understanding the global consequences of this unprecedented humanitarian crisis and to get a closer look at the charitable initiatives already being implemented in the region.

The conference will include interventions by Daban Shadala, the first representative of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan in Spain, and Manuel Martorell, a journalist and writer who specializes in the Middle East.

Daban Shadala
Since 2010, Shadala has been the first representative of the regional government of Kurdistan in Spain. Throughout these years, he has achieved close cooperation with the Spanish government and other institutions.  Similarly, he has arranged several visits by the top-level political delegations from the region of Kurdistan to Spain and a series of business delegations from Spain to Kurdistan, and vice versa. As a result of his efforts, dedication and involvement in promoting political, cultural, economic and educational relations between Spain and the region of Kurdistan, Mr. Shadala was decorated with the honors of the Order of Civil Merit by the Spanish government in the year 2014.

Manuel Martorell
A journalist and writer who specializes in the Middle East and the Kurdish problem, Mr. Martorell has worked at the EFE Press Agency, the newspapers La Voz de Almería, Diario 16 and El Mundo, as well as other news media. He is a co-founder of the online newspaper Cuartopoder, for which he is currently a writer. He authored the first book on Kurdish history in Spanish, “Los Kurdos: historia de una Resistencia” (“The Kurds: History of a resistance”) and the book “Kurdistán: viaje al país prohibido” (“Kurdistan: A trip to the forbidden country”), a broad description of Islamic societies that allows us to get a closer look at the culture and political history of the Kurdish people.
