Folk tales form the main foundation of any people’s oral literature. They reflect that people’s way of thinking and beliefs, while educating, entertaining, uniting and creating harmony. Though she is not a professional storyteller, Lela Ula is the descendant of a great Tunisian family and became famous for the variety of stories she tells, as well as her peculiar, appealing style, a sort of “modern Scheherazade,” to put it in the words of expert José Manuel Pedrosa. En busca del pájaro esmeralda (In Search of the Emerald Bird), one of the stories in the book, is almost a synthesis of the educational role played by such stories. The remaining tales take us on a journey to worlds filled with adventures, love, sacrifice, abuse of power and craftiness. They all directly or indirectly express a certain “moral of the story.”
