MADRID
Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62). 7:00 p.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

On Monday, September 24, Professor Salah Jamal will be presenting his work, published by Icaria Editorial, at an event in which he is accompanied by Teresa Aranguren, a journalist who specializes in the Arab world.

The event will be introduced by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Politics Coordinator.

The book commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” when more than 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their territories after the State of Israel was created. It is a book that reminds us of the dispossession, exile and systematic denial of human rights caused by the failed UN partition plan. Salah Jamal calls for remembrance through an intimate tale, so as to express the experience of looting from future generations. Because for the author, “The Nakba which began in 1948 continues. Every day there is a Nakba. Every day we live the consequences of the Nakba, and the Nakbas yet to come.”The book was illustrated by artist Miquel Ferreres, as an homage to Palestinian families.

Salah Jamal (Nablus, 1951). After the Israeli invasion of 1967, he left the city where he was born in late 1969 and has been living in Barcelona for 48 years. After earning a PhD in Medicine and specializing in Dermatology, he got a university degree in History and Geography from the University of Barcelona, where he is currently a Master’s degree professor on the Arab world. He has authored several books, the most notable of which include: Aroma árabe, recetas y relatos (Arab Aroma: Recipes and tales), translated into several language and awarded with Best Foreign Cookbook at the Gourmand Book Fair in France; Palestina, ocupación y resistencia (Palestine, Occupation and Resistance) and Lo que hay que saber sobre los árabes (What You Have to Know About Arabs), as well as numerous articles published in the media. Salah Jamal received the “Nijmet Al-Quds” Award from the Academy and General Union of Palestinian Writers and Poets.
