A series of films in homage to Alberto Elena

Casa Árabe is dedicating its film schedule in December and January to the memory of Alberto Elena, who was a professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Universidad Carlos III and an advisor to Casa Árabe on the subject of film. This series of screenings includes a selection of movies from each of the film series that Alberto Elena curated for Casa Árabe.

    This film, by Florian Rey (Germany and Spain, 1939, 107 min.), was screened as part of the film series “Eastern Fantasies in Spanish Cinema,” organized with the cooperation of the Cervantes Institute. 
    A musical set in an Arab country where two cousins, who have just put an end to a feud which has split their families apart for years, fall in love with the same woman, the beautiful dancer Aisha, played by Imperio Argentina. The dubbed version which was made for distribution in Arab countries will be shown, with subtitles in Spanish.

    Screening of this film (El Haimoune, 1984) by Nacer Khemir, which formed part of the film series “First Steps of Cinema in the Maghreb”, organized with the cooperation of the African Film Festival of Tarifa 

    This films tells a Sufi tale, in a movie which is pure poetry, a search for roots, love and freedom. Magic and realty meld together to sing a song to the beauty of the desert. The filmmaker, through the painstaking care he took in composing the camera shots and sequences, treated as if they were paintings, and the poetry of his writing, pay homage to the splendor of Arab culture.

    Screening of this film by Elia Suleiman (Palestine, 1996, 84 min.), which was screened as part of the film series “Urban Cartographies
    Jerusalem. A young Palestinian filmmaker returns to the United States to film a movie. His meeting with family and friends from Nazareth once again, and the attentive observation of a people’s lifestyle, that of the Arabs in Israel, which he left behind long ago, are juxtaposed with an outrageous political fantasy over the backdrop of the city of Jerusalem.

    Screening of this film by Youssef Chahine and Khaled Youssef (Egypt and France, 2007, 122 min.), which was shown during the film series “Youssef Chahine Retrospective,” organized with the cooperation of the “Cines del Sur” Film Festival
    Cairo. The entire neighborhood of Choubra is kept under the thumb of Hatem, a corrupt policeman who everyone fears and loathes. Only Nour, the girl who he is attempt to woo, dares stand up to him. However, Nour is secretly in love with Sherif, a young, honorable district attorney.     A classical musical from the golden age of Egyptian cinema, in which Hoda, a famous dancer, decides to retire so she can start a family along with Mamduh, an attractive doctor just starting his career. When Yolanda, a nurse of Italian origin, sets her sights on Mamduh, Hoda’s jealousy drives her to drink and seriously jeopardizes what she most covets.
