This film series, shown in Cordoba, is titled “Our Peripheral Film Series”

Casa Árabe is dedicating its film schedule in the upcoming months, at its headquarters in Madrid and Cordoba, in memory of Alberto Elena, who was a professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Universidad Carlos III and an advisor to Casa Árabe on films. This film series includes a selection of movies from each of the film series that Alberto Elena curated for Casa Árabe.

Alberto Elena (1958-2014) was a professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Universidad Carlos III, where he directed the Master’s degree and Doctoral program on Research in the Media. Before that, he was a professor of the UNED, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the New School for Social Research (New York), and he taught numerous graduate courses at universities in Buenos Aires, Beijing, Barcelona (UAB), Valladolid, etc.  

For more than ten years, he was the founder and director of the film history journal Secuencias: Revista de Historia del Cine (Madrid), and he was a member of the editorial boards of New Cinemas (Bristol) and Revista de Medicina y Cine / Journal of Medicine and Film (Salamanca), in addition to others, as well as the collection 24 Frames published by Wallflower Press (London / New York) and the St. Andrews Film Studies published by the University of St. Andrews. 

Amongst his publications are titles such as El cine del Tercer Mundo, Diccionario de realizadores (Third World Film: Dictionary of Directors, 1993), Cine e Islam (Film and Islam, 1995), Satyajit Ray (1998), Los cines periféricos: África, Oriente Medio, India (Peripheral Cinemas: Africa, Middle East, India, 1999), The Cinema of Abbas Kiarostami (London, 2005) and La invención del subdesarrollo: cine, tecnología y modernidad (The Invention of Underdevelopment: Film, technology and modernity, Valencia, 2007) or La llamada de África. Estudios sobre el cine colonial español (The Call of Africa: Studies on Spanish colonial cinema, Barcelona, 2010).

He also worked as a planner of film series. In addition to being the Director of Programming for Granada’s “Cines del Sur” Festival, he organized different film series and retrospective film shows for specialized festivals, in his capacity as the Spain Delegate of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC). He was also a jury member at film festivals in Berlin, San Sebastián, Buenos Aires, Paris, Warsaw, Tangier, Ouagadougou… He formed part of the scientific committee at a wide range of international congresses, and in 2002 and 2009, he received awards for Research from the Spanish Association of Film Historians (AEHC).

As of the time when Casa Árabe was created in 2007, he worked as a film advisor for this institution, where he curated numerous film series, organized an introductory course on Arab cinema and contributed to knowledge of the films from these countries, having had many texts published in the journal  AWRAQ and in film programs.
