For Palestinians the year 2017 is an anniversary of several events: one century has passed since the Balfour Declaration, through which British colonialism explicitly supported the Zionist project; it has been 70 years since the resolution to partition Palestinian territory approved by the United Nations General Assembly, and 50 years since the West Bank and Gaza were militarily occupied. This last event, in violation of International Law and unanimously condemned by the international community, has given rise to a situation lasting until today that has radically transformed the physical and human landscape, conditioning and blocking any possible political fix.

The course “Palestine, a half century of occupation: A legal, political and human approach” has the objective of analyzing the meaning and legal, political and human implications of one of the longest enduring cases of belligerent occupation. It will discuss how a quasi-State has been built under such unusual conditions, placing a special emphasis on the European Union and Spain’s positions on the occupation and Palestinians.

Co-directed by Isaías Barreñada Bajo and Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio, it will be held from July 3 to 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (except on Friday, July 7, when it will end at 2:00 p.m.) and will include the cooperation of the Diplomatic Mission of Palestine in Spain, the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, and EuroMed Rights.
