The reading group called “Maimun has left with Franco now that the orange tree is in blossom” will be taking a closer look at this novel by Youssef El Maimouni, from April 25 to May 27. The final session will be held at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid. Registration until April 22.

When the Hills Walk (Cuando los montes caminen) by Youssef El Maimouni (published by Roca Editorial, 2021), recounts for the first time ever episodes from the Spanish Civil War through the viewpoint of a young Moroccan enlisted on the rebels’ side.

This closer look at the book will be taking place with the help of Laura Casielles (poet and journalist), Ibrahim Ibnou Goush (actor), Marta Echaves (researcher and writer) and Youssef El Maimouni (author and social educator). Spanning four sessions, each guest will contribute to interpretation of the story from the perspective of their field of work, while also proposing reading dynamics, lines of thought and other content that helps place the book within a broader historical and political context.

The reading group will be of a nomadic nature, situating the text and the voicesreading it into spaces with different historical and cultural resonances. The event is being held as part of the activities revolving around the second chapter of the film “Tetuan, Tetuán, تطوان” devoted to Madrid by Adrian Schindler, an artist-in-residence at Matadero from January to July 2022.

*Excerpt from Song of the Orange Tree in Blossom (Moroccan folk) quoted in the novel.
