The Crusades and Holy War on the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages

November 30, 2017From 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
MADRID
Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62) From 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.

Casa Árabe is hosting one of these days, devoted to men of religion and war from the tenth to fifteenth centuries, at its headquarters in Madrid.

The Vice-Rectorate of Cooperation and the University Extension of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and its School of Philosophy and Letters have organized a series of international days on “Men of Religion and War: The Crusades and Holy War on the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages (tenth to fifteenth centuries)” within the framework of the R&D project “CONFRONTATIO. Religious violence on the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages: War, discourse, apologetics and the historiographic narrative (tenth to fifteenth centuries).” The project has been coordinated by the professors of medieval history Carlos de Ayala Martínez and J. Santiago Palacios Ontalva, from the aforementioned university.

These days of events will reunite the reports produced during the first year in which the R&D project CONFRONTATIO (HAR2016-74968-P) was carried out, with a focus on the development of war as a practice, the language of religious violence and, more specifically, the clergy’s participation in military activities. It has been found that this participation is one of the most significant indicators in being able to assess the degree of a war confrontation’s sacralization. In this sense, these days of events will very much take into account the evaluation of that presence in the various stages which comprise the chronological framework of the gathering, as well as performing a comparative analysis between the two traditions, Christian and Islamic, in confrontations.

At its Madrid headquarters, Casa Árabe will be hosting the sessions devoted to the Islamic perspective, ending with a round table discussion on the “Religious Attitude Towards War: Christian and Islamic perspectives,” presided over by Eduardo Manzano Moreno (CCHS-CSIC), with the participation of all those attending.
