Dolors Bramon will be giving this conference in Madrid on Monday, April 25, thus officially opening the course “Islam and Muslims Today.” We will also be presenting the latest issue of Awraq on “Shari’a or the Sacred Law of Muslims.” You can watch it live on YouTube.

The conference by Dolors Bramon, professor emeritus at the University of Barcelona, will analyze the principles of Islamic doctrine which all governments that claim to be Islamic must follow when ruling. She will explain the features which define an Islamic government and compare them with the behaviors observed from Islam’s earliest times to the modern day.

This will mark the opening of the tenth edition of the course “Islam and MuslimsToday: Foundations, diversity and dynamics of change,” organized by Spain’s Diplomatic School and Casa Árabe, and includes the presentation of Issue 20 of Awraq: Journal of analysis and thought on the contemporary Arab and Islamic world, the subject of which is “Shari’a or the Sacred Law of Muslims: Past and present through its history, texts and protagonists,” given by Delfina Serrano, a researcher at the CSIC’s Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East (ILC) and a coordinator of this issue along with Javier Rosón, Casa Árabe’s coordinator in Cordoba and the editor of Awraq.

The journal deals with the development of the science on shari’a and its various manifestations in pre-modern and contemporary eras and has been published as a basic work of reference for the teaching and spreading awareness in Spain about topics related with the concept of shari’a and its intellectual and academic tradition.

It was produced as a result of a series of conferences on this subject held throughout the year of 2021 at Casa Árabe Cordoba and was coordinated by Delfina Serrano. Eleven of the articles included in the monograph are revised versions of the conferences given by their authors during the conference series, whereas the other seven were written by different experts who could not initially participate in the series for organizational reasons but who have been included in
the publication.

The official course opening session will be attended by Alberto Ucelay, Director General for the Maghreb, Mediterranean and Middle East of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation; Alberto Antón Cortes, the Ambassador-Director of Spain’s Diplomatic School, and Irene Lozano Domingo, Casa Árabe’s General Director.
