Film screening on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (November 29)

The Idol is the latest movie by director Hany Abu-Assad, who was nominated for the Oscar for his film Paradise Now in 2006 and the film Omar in 2013.  On this occasion, he has directed a film about overcoming adversity and showing courage in a surprisingly real story, that of Mohammad Assaf, winner of the year 2013 edition of the television program Arab Idol, which became a major social phenomenon. This Palestinian youth from the Gaza Strip of humble origin attempts to escape his social reality through music.

His amazing voice causes him and his group, which also includes his sister and two friends, to envision hope and leads Mohammad to sign up for the famous television contest. He must then surmount all of the trials and tribulations necessary to reach the auditions, all the way until becoming the winner of Arab Idol in 2013.

Shortly after his victory, Mohammad Assaf was named a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations (UNHCR) participating in activities devoted mainly to Palestinian refugees.
