The impact of the war in Ukraine on the Middle East and North Africa

On Monday, November 7, the Complutense North Africa and Middle East Research Group (GICMOM) is organizing the seminar “Current Context in the Middle East-North Africa. The impact of the war in Ukraine” in conjunction with Casa Árabe. It will be held at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid School of Political Science and Sociology.

The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Meeting Hall of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid School of Political Science and Sociology, with an initial panel discussion in English titled “War in Ukraine and new regional balances” given by Laleh Khalidi (Queen Mary, University of London), Ruth Ferrero (UCM) and Alfonso Casani (GICMOM), moderated by Rafael Bustos.

The second panel discussion, ”Economy, society and migrations in the region” (from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.), will deal with the war’s economic impact and development aid. The speakers will be Isaías Barreñada (GICMOM) and Augusto Delkáder (GICMOM), with moderation by Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio. This session and the following will be held in Spanish.

The third panel discussion will be held in the Salón de Grados (third floor) from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. with the topic “Regional powers facing war,” with Javier Lion (GICMOM), Bárbara Azaola (GRESAM) and Miguel Hernando de Larramendi (GRESAM). They will be talking about Israel and the dynamics in North Africa, with moderation by David Hernández.

The fourth and final panel discussion, ”International powers in the region,” from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., will be led by Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio (GICMOM), who will be focusing on Russia’s foreign policy, Carmen Rodríguez (TEIM-UAM), who will be talking about Turkey’s role in the war, and David Hernández (GICMOM), who will explore the regional strategy of the United States.
